This years race will be held in Jackson county in and around the city of Maquoketa (pronounced muh-COKE-it-uh).  Maquoketa derives from the Native American word meaning "bear river".  The area is home to the Maquoketa Caves State Park which is located a few miles northwest of the city.  The park contains more caves than any other state park in Iowa.  Gmras has been held here before and the area will put up a challenge to all racers.

The race will be a 12-hour Supported race.  Disciplines will include orienteering, biking, paddleing, a rappel.  You will see you support crew at least 3 times throught the race where you will be switching disciplines.   The paddle will cover 12 - 16 miles, the biking will be between 25 - 35 miles, and the orienteering will cover between 8 - 12 miles.  The race will start early in the morning and we hope for a good day of racing.

Race check in and meeting will be at the Maquoketa Caves State Park pavilion B
10970 98th St. Maquoketa, IA 52060 (Mapquest directons) Race start and finish will also be at pavilion B.

Race check in/gear check Friday, May 21 5:30pm to 8:00pm
Race meeting Friday, May 21 8:00pm
Race start Saturday, May 22 6:30am  (team line up 6:15am for last minute instruction)

Your Support crew will be given a well marked map of the TA's of where they will meet you. They are responsible for transporting your gear from one location to another.  There will be help at the water sections but that is not to say that you may have to help with your own watercrafts(loading and unloading).
We are not specific on the type of watercraft, it must be paddled no motors, that's it. Canoe or kayak it makes no difference to us. it just has to be handled by your support.
If you are having trouble finding a watercraft there are several places in the area that rent(google to find) and they may be able to help.  If still having troubles contact us and we will try to help, in any case you will still need transportation that can handle bikes and a canoe.
Maps will be 1:24000 and 1:15000 scale. Maps will be given out friday night at the meeting at 8:00pm and we will not keep you too long, we will give you ample time to plot your points.
